Lysterfield Cricket Club

title row - ball  About Us

John Myszka (President), Mal Rand (Treasurer) and Matthew Riley founded the Bayswater United Cricket Club in 1989. They recruited other young players from the Boronia Churches Cricket Club who wished to improve their cricket and enjoy the fellowship of a more social environment. Initial members included Matthew & Justin Polwarth, Cameron Hurley, Stuart Cameron, Danny Vertessy, Chris Rowlands and Warwick Peluso. A meeting at Matt Rileys house in Bayswater confirmed that the new clubs colours were to be black & white (gothic lettering on caps) and that 2 senior teams should be entered into the (then) East Suburban Churches and District

Cricket Association. A home ground (including a hut for clubrooms) was found at Fibremakers Oval, Bayswater Rd. Bayswater and the 'Baysy Beavers' were ready to roll!

Ironically, in October of 1989 the first match, (2nd X1, as 1st X1 was washed out), was played at Bayswater High School against Boronia Churches. The Beavers won by 102 runs. New players such as Paul Moore, David Quirk, Eddie Connor and Paul Spruhan soon joined in the fun. In this first season the 2nd X1 made the Final but were defeated.

Over the following few years Bayswater United added many more very young players to it's ranks such as Andrew Wilson and Bayswater locals with surnames including Whitty, Hill & Slater. In 1994 the club made the move to the Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association. Tragically Stuart 'The Freak' Wellington, a popular and determined committee member and player, died in a motorcycle accident in 1994. The Club Champion Award was named after him to honour his work for the cricket club.

Having struggled to find a permanent home base (4 home grounds in 7 years) to suit requirements the club relocated to the newly developed suburb of Lysterfield. President John Myszka's vision and hard work was to prove invaluable. A new beginning was to take place at Lakesfield Reserve with the formation of the new Lysterfield Cricket Club. Many were unaware that there had been a Lysterfield Cricket Club competing in the FTGDCA (won a premiership or two) during the 1940s and 50s.

Justin Polwarth became President in 1996 and in 1997 Stuart Alford was appointed as Lysterfield's first coach. 4 senior teams were playing and a junior section was started. David Hill was the inaugural Junior President. Names that were to have a lasting effect over the following years such as Alston, Moody, Burdon, Donnellan, Thiel, Woods and Morris began their involvement during the infancy of the junior section. In most regards the move to Lysterfield proved an immediate success. Membership increased sharply but whilst finals appearances were common a premiership was still elusive. But that was about to change.

Lysterfield Cricket Club (in its new form) won its first premiership in the 99/00 season. It was in the Under 14 2a division. Dave Sheldon coached the side and players included Brett Patterson and Justin Carland.

The first senior flag was won in 2000/01. It was a 2nd X1 victory in Decoite 2 division. Luke Slater captained the team. The monkey was off Lysterfield's back. During this season 1st X1 star Musa Saadi won the Lomax Medal awarded to the best player in Decoite Shield. He went on to score a Club record 173 not out the following season and then won the Lomax again in 02/03. The 2nds won back-to-back premierships, this time skippered by Eddie Connor. In 2002 the strength of the junior section was apparent. Sean Alston, Ryan Williams and Jarrod Moody were selected to represent the FTGDCA to tour Sri Lanka at junior level. Orthodox bowler Sean 'Skip' Alston went on to play at Premier Club Richmond having won the Junior Player of the Year award in the FTGDCA. He had great success during the Under 17 State carnival including taking a wicket on the MCG (what more could you want) in the final and winning the series. More junior premierships were achieved in 2002/03. The Under 17s went through the season undefeated to achieve the ultimate. This squad was coached by Matthew 'Tao' Polwarth and included Jarrod Moody, Tim Binks, Ryan Pierce, Dean Grigg and Shaun Hanlon. The Under 15/2s also won the pennant thanks to the coaching of Nic Fester and players such as Forster-Jennings, Whiting, Jones and Moore.

The 2003/04 season began on a very sour note for Lysterfield. Life Member Jan (Jasiu) Myszka died in a car accident. He was a true beaver. A wonderful gentleman in every sense of the word he will be missed by all Lysterfield people forever. The Clubman award is now dedicated to his memory. Perhaps inspired by Jasiu's legacy the Beavers had a sensational year. The club achieved a 1st X1 premiership for the first time. Chris Hill coached the squad. A magnificent century from Warwick Peluso and an outstanding all-round performance from Ben Wise saw the Beavers victorious in the Decoite Shield final. The Club was to be promoted to the Associations highest grade (Knox Tavern Cup) for the following season. The Under 13/2b team also won a flag. Rick Walker coached this team. Impressive youngster Brendan Walsh represented Victoria in the National Under 15 Championships. He is one of a number of Lysterfield youngsters who may one day make the big time, Brother Nathan was alongside Darren Dewar and Daniel Forster-Jennings in a team that claimed the Under 15 title in 04/05. Peter Matthews proved to be a great asset to the club by guiding the youngsters.

In 2004 a Veterans team was entered for the first time.

Lysterfield Cricket Club has its future in its own hands. It has been an outstanding achievement to evolve from 3 founding members to a large club with a growing junior base in 15 years. Many people are responsible for its successes (too many to name in this document). Perhaps one day it could be the strongest, most respected club in it's region.
